Maintaining good mental health is important at any age. Here are 16 tips to help maintain good mental health:

1. Can you adapt to change? Being flexible helps when situations in life change.
2. Use it or lose it: Keep your mind and body active.
3. Use caution when taking over-the-counter medicaitons that suppress your mind, such as tranquilizers and sleeping aids.
4. Keep appointments with your family physician on a regular basis.
5. Do you have goals? Making goals and reaching toward them will help you remain positive about your life.
6. Do you consider yourself a positive person? This attitude is important to good mental health.
7. How's your funny bone? Laughter can help.
8. Exercise, eat right, and get enough sleep each night.
9. Don't isolate yourself if you can help it. For some, isolation and mental illness go hand-in- hand.
10. Supportive relationships are important for good mental health. Build on your positive relationships as much as possible.
11. Mental illness is treatable. Know the symptoms.
12. Understand that treatment is available. Know where to get help when needed.
13. There's a community mental health provider near you. Iidentify it before you need it.
14. Do you know how to refer someone for help? Prepare yourself before you need to act.
15. Know where to go to get advice.
16. Understand that if you seek help, you have rights. Know your rights as a consumer of mental health services.

Maintaining good mental health is on-going. For those who need help, it’s important to know that help is available … and acceptable.
